Stripping Maggie Down

Filling the Garage

Nov.11,2000 Stripping Her Down Once I knew Maggie's drivetrain was functional, I made the decision to strip her down to a rolling chassis, and move her into the garage. I decided to do most of the panel removal outside, due to work space. Maggie will share the garage with Beula, and after measuring, I expect it to be a tight fit. I will store the bulk of the body panels outside.
I had been soaking the body fasteners with Kroil over the past few weeks. The fasteners turned out nicely. From Above My goal, since it was the rainy season in Louisiana, was to get Maggie down to a rolling chassis and into the garage in one day. Once inside, I can leisurely refurbish the frame, run brake lines and wires, and enjoy the garden outside again.
First off were the wings, hood, and all three doors. I was amazed at the shape the bulkhead and frame were in. The frame still had original paint, and chaulk marks from the factory. It was rusted and pitted at the battery box, however. There must have been a pretty corrosive battery in there at some time. The passenger side brake line was rusted completely through, and the battery platform was toast. Plans for Maggie continue to solidify. My wife is still trying to choose the right tan color. I have decided on black for the wheels, the frame, and bumper. It is just a question of POR-15 or Rustoleum. I will use my Old Man Emu polyurethane bushings in her suspension.

The top came off next.

To the Frame
Then the tub. A two man job.

Stripped Down
Next we scraped everything down with putty knives
and sprayed on engine cleaner for a good wash down.

Miller Time!

Once most of the crud was removed, we rolled Maggie into the shop with Beula. Her body parts were taken to the back yard. Now her restoration will not be slowed by the weather, or lack of daylight. I just wish I had some dollies to make her more manuverable in the shop. Total time: five hours.
