The Breakfast

A Series Land Rover's breakfast is like it's face. No two are alike, and they set the personality of the beast. Maggie's Grill Why do they call it a "breakfast" anyway? Is it because it comes first? Is it because the grill can be used as a grill? When I first got Maggie, her breakfast had apparently been painted black. The black paint had flaked off, however. She was also missing her Land Rover oval. After removing the grill and headlight buckets, I sand blasted the breakfast. Because it is made of mild steel, the breakfast rusts, especially around the headlight buckets and along the bottom. On Beula, I had to reinforce the bottom of the breakfast with angle iron. On Maggie, reinforcement was not necessary. If you reinforce, only weld at the ends and in the center. The breakfast flexes offroad. I filled all the pitting beneath the headlights with body filler, and sanded them down. I then primed and painted the breakfast inside and out with Rustoleum spray paint. In the meantime, a good friend from the net sent me the Land Rover oval I needed. I cleaned and painted it as well. After some debate I decided to use aftermarket headlight buckets from WIPAC. I obtained mine from The Thatched Roof Garage. On Beula, I had used Baja Bug headlight buckets, and had to do a bit of cutting to accomodate them. The WIPACs, however, slipped right in. They are definitely the way to go, unless you are restoring to a concours level. Being plastic, the WIPACs will never rust. Maggie's lucky horseshoe was found among the loose parts tossed in her cabin by previous owners.
