When Donreaux's dog Teddy went and killed a Mama coon, we were forced to take in two orphans here at the hideaway. Teddy had spent the better part of the day barking into a knothole in a hollow tree. Almost drove us crazy. Around the end of the day, the Mama coon had enough, and came out the top of the tree. When she hit the ground, there was no stopping Teddy. He made short work of her. When the mayhem was over, we went to the tree, and heard whimpering inside.
It isn't a good feeling, reaching into a hollow tree, not knowing if the Papa coon is in there. Luckily he was not. We pulled out two babies, and brought them inside. They quickly took up residence in my boots.
We fed them with a baby bottle and milk for several weeks. Because they had fleas, we got them flea collars. Then we weaned them onto dried catfood. We named them Haskel and Mathilda. Eventually, they were into everything, they were remarkable in that way. So we had to reintroduce them into the wild. They still come back from time to time, if only to visit and chatter at us from the trees.
